Author to give talks on non-violence
PLATTSBURGH -- Best-selling author Mark Kurlansky will give two talks at Plattsburgh State.
The talk today will be "1968, Nonviolence and the Movement to End War," and Friday's talk will be "Nonviolence: 25 Lessons from the History of a Dangerous Idea."
Both lectures are free and will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Krinovitz Recital Hall in Hawkins Hall.
Town of AuSable seeking residents' input
AUSABLE -- As part of its effort to plan for the town's future, the Town of AuSable is sending out a survey to all households in the town.
The Town Council asks that town residents complete and return the survey no later than April 15.
When the survey results are compiled, the committee that is drafting the Comprehensive Plan will have clear information about the residents' wishes for future growth and development.
Last May, the town hosted a vision workshop, and those results will be combined with the survey to increase public involvement and voice.
When the plan is drafted, another public meeting will be held to present goals and objectives for community response.
CCC Board calls special meeting
PLATTSBURGH -- The Clinton Community College Board of Trustees has scheduled a special meeting at 7:30 a.m. Monday in the second-floor board room of the George Moore Building on the main campus.
The board will immediately move into executive session to discuss a contractual issue.
Two seats open on Beekmantown Board
BEEKMANTOWN -- Beekmantown Central School Board has two five-year seats open this year.
The seats are currently held by Richard LaVigne and Steve Trombley.
Petitions are available from the district clerk at 197 Haynes Road between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or from the district Web site at www.bcsdk12.org.
Petitions must be returned to the District Clerk's Office no later than 5 p.m. April 21.
Seedling, wildflowers sold through agency
WESTPORT -- The Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District is now holding its annual seedling sale.
Available is a large selection of bare-root tree and shrub seedlings and transplants for erosion control, wildlife-habitat improvement, windbreaks and reforestation.
Groundcovers and wildflower seed mixes can also be purchased.
The tree and shrub seedlings and transplants are sold as bare-root stock, not potted nor balled.
Six different wildflower-seed mixtures are available.
Also available are slow-release fertilizer tablets that will provide nutrients for up to two years, and water gel, which helps to retain moisture around the roots, especially important during a dry spring and summer.

Participants sought for St. Mary's parade
CHAMPLAIN -- The St. Mary's Bazaar Parade Committee in Champlain is seeking participants or entries for its annual parade, to be held at noon Sunday, May 25.
Any individual or group interested in participating is asked to call Pat Gladd at 298-8614 or the parish office at 298-8244 as soon as possible.
Assessor, Essex County residents to meet
WILLSBORO -- The assessor for Willsboro, Westport and Elizabethtown will hold a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Visitor Center, Main Street, Willsboro.
The purpose of this meeting is to explain the assessment process and give property owners an opportunity to ask questions.
The meeting is open to anyone, from any town.
