LAKE PLACID -- The Adirondack Community Trust is accepting applications for a number of scholarships established to benefit students from the region.
DECKER SCHOLARSHIP
The Charles B. Decker Memorial Scholarship awards grants between $500 to $2,000 to graduating high-school students from the Tri-Lakes or Watertown area, college students studying journalism and to professional journalists interested in continuing education or appropriate projects.
Scholarship recipients must have a tangible interest in journalism, the ability to handle college work and financial need to a degree that further education cannot be undertaken without financial assistance.
Grants are made for up to one year and recipients may reapply annually.
The scholarships were established in 1991 upon the death of Charlie Decker, assistant managing editor of the Watertown Daily Times and the former editor of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
PLANTE SCHOLARSHIP
The Dr. U. R. Plante Medical Scholarship awards an annual $10,000 scholarship to a student attending medical school who has lived in either the Adirondack Park or Clinton, Franklin, Essex, Hamilton or St. Lawrence counties for at least two years.
Grants are restricted to students entering the fields of family practice, OB/GYN or gerontology who are willing to return to the North Country or another rural area to practice medicine for two years.
This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. U. R. Plante, who practiced medicine in Massena from 1916 to 1972.
LOWE SCHOLARSHIP
The William T. Lowe Scholarship will provide awards between $1,000 and $2,000 for students. The recipient must be a resident of Clinton or Essex counties; be a high-school graduate with high scholastic standing; illustrate by example creative writing skills; plan to pursue college studies in journalism, English or teaching; and show financial need. A committee of community members has been established to review the applications.
MC CULLOUGH SCHOLARSHIP
The Sean McCullough Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 in honor of Sean McCullough, a Plattsburgh High School student who died tragically on May 14, 2005. He was a gifted student, talented leader and dedicated athlete who cared deeply about friends and family.
This year, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Clinton or Essex counties with strong academic skills and competitive spirit who wishes to continue his or her education at the college level.
