Lake Placid mulls extending paid parking

LAKE PLACID — You may have to pay to park late in downtown Lake Placid.

The village is mulling a law that could extend the hour of its parking meters to as late as 10 p.m.

Parking meters are currently in operation from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the village.

Mayor Jamie Rogers admits that some residents and merchants have already expressed concern.

"I can tell you the feedback I got about changing it to 10 o'clock — it was not positive," he told trustees Monday.

The new law could also extend the maximum parking time from two to four hours.

These and other details can be changed by a simple majority of the Village Board, rather than amending the law.

Trustees say they will wait to hear the feedback they receive at next month's public hearing.

Violators will also see heavier fines under the new law. The village says it will raise fines for its paid parking from $10 to $35. Fines increase to $45 if not paid within 30 days.

More serious violations, such as parking in handicap spaces, could be as high as $130.

The village is revamping its parking law after modernizing its meters. Last year, the village purchased 22 "pay-and-display" meters for about $182,000.

The new parking meters accept U.S. and Canadian coins — and soon credit cards.

The meters went online after Christmas Day, when the village traditionally offers free parking to encourage downtown shopping during the holiday season.

Trustees set the public hearing for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2.
